According to data, Norway became the first nation in the world where sales of electric vehicles surpassed those powered by gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines last year. Volkswagen, a German automaker, replaced Tesla as the leading manufacturer of battery-powered vehicles. According to the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 54.3 percent of all new cars sold in the Nordic nation in 2020, setting a new record. This is an increase from 42.4 percent in 2019 and just 1 percent of the whole market a decade earlier.

Oil-producing Norway exempts fully electric vehicles from tariffs levied on those using fossil fuels in an effort to become the first country to abolish the sale of gasoline and diesel cars by 2025.

 

Sales of BEVs increased in the latter quarter of 2020, peaking in December with a 66.7 percent market share, which was a record for any single month. The most popular new passenger cars in Norway last year were the e-Tron sports utility and Sportback models from Volkswagen's Audi brand, which topped the 2020 leaderboard.

 

Tesla's mid-sized Model 3, which had won the competition in 2019, was demoted to second place. As additional models are released onto the market, industry analysts and auto distributors predict that sales of electric vehicles will continue to surge in 2021.
